PAN Aadhaar Link Online: Step-by-Step Guide, Fee, Status Check & Rules

Link PAN with Aadhaar online guide 2026

To link PAN with Aadhaar online, open the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in), click (Link Aadhaar) under Quick Links, enter your PAN, Aadhaar number and name as on Aadhaar, and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. If the original deadline has passed for you, pay the ₹1,000 fee first. The whole process takes about five minutes, and a PAN that has turned inoperative is usually made operative again within 30 days.

This guide covers: Pan Aadhaar link online process, what it costs, how to confirm it worked, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Key Takeaways

  • If you are past the due date, pay ₹1,000 under Other Receipts (500) first.
  • Names and dates of birth on both documents must match exactly.
  • An unlinked PAN is inoperative, which blocks ITR filing and refunds and raises TDS and TCS.
  • After linking, the PAN is usually made operative within 30 days.

Why PAN and Aadhaar Must Be Linked

The requirement comes from Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961, which was inserted by the Finance Act, 2017 and applies to every individual who held a PAN on 1 July 2017 and is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number. The idea was simple: tie each PAN to one verified person, which removes duplicate and fake PANs and makes it harder to hide income behind multiple identities.

The Supreme Court examined the provision in Binoy Viswam v. Union of India (2017) and upheld its validity, while reading down the part that applied to people with no Aadhaar. Since then, the linking rule has been enforceable for everyone who is eligible.

A note on the new law: the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act for tax years starting 1 April 2026, and the linking rule has been carried into the new Act under a new section number. The obligation, the ₹1,000 fee and the practical steps below are unchanged for taxpayers. Check the current section reference on the Income Tax Department’s site if you need to cite it.

Who Needs to Link Pan and Aadhaar, and Who Is Exempt

You must link if you are an individual PAN holder who is eligible to hold an Aadhaar number.

You are exempt if you fall into one of these categories (as listed by the Income Tax Department and followed by brokers such as Zerodha):

  • Residents of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir
  • Non-residents (NRIs) as per the Income-tax Act
  • Individuals who are not citizens of India
  • Individuals aged 80 years or more at any time during the previous year

If your residential status on the portal is wrong (this is a common problem for NRIs whose trading or demat account was suspended), update it in your profile on the e-filing portal rather than linking.

Before You Start Linking Your Pan and Aadhaar: Checklist

Most failed attempts come from a small mismatch, so check these first:

  1. Name and date of birth must match between PAN and Aadhaar. If they differ, correct one of them first (Aadhaar through UIDAI, PAN through the PAN correction facility).
  2. Your mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar, because the OTP goes only to that number.
  3. Keep your 10-character PAN and 12-digit Aadhaar handy.
  4. If you are linking late, pay the ₹1,000 fee first (see Step 1 below). Linking will not go through without it.

How to Link PAN and Aadhaar Online: Step by Step

Step 1: Pay the ₹1,000 fee (only if you are past the due date)

On the e-filing portal, go to e-Pay Tax and enter your PAN. Choose Income Tax, select the current assessment year, and under type of payment choose Other Receipts (500), which is the head for the fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar. Pay ₹1,000 by net banking, debit card or UPI. Keep the challan. It can take a few working days for the payment to show against your PAN before the link request is accepted.

The fee comes from Section 234H of the Income-tax Act, was ₹500 from 1 April 2022 and was raised to ₹1,000 from 1 July 2022.

Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and click Link Aadhaar under Quick Links on the home page. You do not need to log in.

Step 3: Enter your details

Type your PAN and your 12-digit Aadhaar number, then click Validate. The portal checks whether the fee payment is on record.

Step 4: Confirm your Aadhaar details

Enter your name exactly as printed on your Aadhaar and your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. If your Aadhaar shows only the year of birth, tick the box that says so. Tick the consent box and click Link Aadhaar.

Step 5: Verify with the OTP

Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile and click Validate. You will see a confirmation message.

Step 6: Check the status

Wait a few days, then open Link Aadhaar Status on the portal and enter your PAN and Aadhaar. You will see one of three results: linked, request under validation, or not linked.

By SMS. Send a message in this format to 567678 or 56161 from your Aadhaar-registered number:

UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN>

Offline, with biometrics. If online linking keeps failing because of mismatched details, you can visit a centre run by the PAN service providers, Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) or UTIITSL. Carry your PAN, Aadhaar and the fee challan. A small biometric authentication charge applies.

What Happens If Your PAN Is Not Linked With Aadhaar

An unlinked PAN does not get cancelled. It becomes inoperative, and under CBDT Circular 3 of 2023 the consequences apply from the day it becomes inoperative until it is made operative again:

  • You cannot file an income tax return using that PAN, and pending returns are not processed
  • Pending refunds are not issued, and no interest is paid on them for the period the PAN stays inoperative
  • Pending proceedings, such as for defective returns, cannot be completed
  • Tax is deducted (TDS) and collected (TCS) at higher rates
  • Banks, mutual funds, brokers and demat providers may fail or freeze your KYC

The good news: once you pay the fee and complete the linking, the department makes the PAN operative, normally within 30 days.

PAN-Aadhaar Linking in Numbers

The scale of this exercise is one reason the topic gets so much search interest.

  • 74.67 crore PANs had been allotted by 31 March 2024, against just 2.76 crore in 2014, as per Income Tax Department data
  • 60.5 crore of those were already linked with Aadhaar by 31 March 2024
  • 11.48 crore PANs were still unlinked (excluding exempt categories) as of 29 January 2024, according to a Lok Sabha reply

  • 2.125 crore people paid the ₹1,000 fee between 1 July 2022 and 30 November 2023

The fee collections peaked in 2023-24, the year the deadline lapsed and PANs turned inoperative, which shows how many people acted only when the consequences became real.
